As we grow older, we tend to lose strength, coordination, spatial awareness and balance. Although it will happen at some point, we can slow down the process. Working our middle body with awareness, stimulates a particular area of the brain called the cerebellum, which affects these body's functions, in that way we feel more confident and agile, have more balance and better coordination
Core stability enables athletes to control their body position, generate optimum power, and transfers force to the most efficient muscles and limbs.
Proprioception is an ability sharpened by core exercises. Proprioception refers to the body's ability to sense movement within joints, muscles, soft tissue and throughout all its kinetic chain. This enables us to know where our limbs are in space without having to look: Spatial Awareness. It is almost like the body's intuition.
Core/Abdominal muscles have very important functions:
1) To spare the spine from excessive load
2) To transfer force from the lower body to the upper body and vice versa.
3) To coordinate the muscle skeletal system to support our body against the compressive force of gravity.
4) To provide Sensorial Feedback and spatial awareness
When we include work on Core Muscles we:
1) Increase body's agility: more confidence and speed to respond physically before threats of accident/clashes, also speeding up recuperation from risky positions.
2) Increase movement efficiency, being more assertive in our moves.
3) Improve body control and balance.
4) Increase power output from both the core musculature and peripheral muscles such as the shoulders, arms and legs.
5) Reduce risk of injury (the core muscles act as shock absorbers for jumps and rebounds etc.)
6) Increase Movement Precision , Grace, Elegance.
7) Integrate Neurological work with Muscle Work. It is connected to the area of the cerebellum, and it reflects in better coordination, memory, Focus and better vision.
8) Self-control postural, better alignment, Sense of grounding, Body Confidence.
9) Abdominal Fat reduction, building Abdominal Muscles.
From my experience of training individuals and groups, I have learnt that Body Work including dance, should include Core Muscles work as a tool in order to improve not only physical endurance but also neuromuscular integration, which reverts in better memory, concentration and focus. It has also been demonstrated that auditory and vision capabilities improved.
